westtown dye Garden

In the summer of 2019, we started growing indigo at Westtown Center. We are growing Persicaria Tinctoria, otherwise known as Japanese Indigo, from seeds descended from Rowland Rickett’s plants. Our first batch of indigo is dried and waiting to be combined with this year’s batch before processing it for dyeing.

This summer, we are expanding the garden to include Coreopsis (Coreopsis tinctoria), Madder (Rubia tinctorium), Curled Dock (Rumex crispus), and Sweet Marigold (Tagetes lucida).

We’re looking forward to dyeing some TWM projects and doing dye projects with the W.E.F.T. class.

For those of you who planted indigo seeds from us, send pictures of your plants!
