Plaid comes from the Scottish Gaelic term plaide, or blanket. This blanket is a complex plaid built out of the material, visual and structural terms developed by SW during her time at TWM. The final composition is a result of numerous iterations made at full-scale on the big loom.
ABOUT THE COLLABORATION
SW is Sarah Wertzberger, TWM is The Weaving Mill. Sarah Wertzberger is an artist who works in ceramics, painting and textiles. Over the course of nine months, Sarah came to Chicago several times, first to develop samples on the handloom, then to work on the big loom. This project began with the premise that we would push into the limitations of the loom in whatever way these fabrics called for. Sarah’s process is about intuition, play and discovery. Our approach together in making these objects reflects that. The collaboration was about bringing something into being in a responsive and iterative way, something that all the participants were essential to and something that responded directly to the conditions in which it was made.
